Freezes during partitioning using Bootcamp

okay, have macbook pro 10.6.8 , want have separate partition run windows 7 on. however, when tried make partition got error, "files can not moved" looked solution , did following: 1. backed external hard drive, erased hd, , restored data back.
stopped me getting "files can not moved" error message, when started bootcamp bar got 30-40% before whole computer froze. have tried backing up/restoring/same result 3 times now. have ideas on how fix this? or know of alternative?
