Can't Edit the Hosts directory

so, want make changes in hosts directory. so, root, type in:

sudo /applications/textedit.app/contents/macos/textedit /etc/hosts

however, response;

2012-01-26 19:37:49.146 textedit [233:8e13] nstrackpersistenturls:lssharedfileliseinsertitemurl ( ) failed @ inserting url file://localhost/etc/hosts (etc/hosts)

though textedit still opens i'm looking for. however, logged in root won't let me make changes. ideas?

 

try editing pico (using sudo)

think might need start osx app using open, sudo open /applications/textedit.app/contents/macos/textedit /etc/hosts
