Use built in cam without indicator light?

i have paranoid friend puts tape on macbook pro's built in webcam. insist camera can't secretly used, camera hardwired indicator led, , if camera has power, led have power. if led doesn't have power, neither camera, string of cheap christmas lights.

incorrect? possible use built in webcam without indicator light (without physically modifying machine?)

 

i bet if code kernel activate camera without led being on.
