Upgrading RAM on a brand new iMac

hi all,

i'm bite bullet , buy new imac (was going hold off potential 2012 version, fear waiting while, although kick myself if new 1 come out within month after me buying mine, typical!) i'm thinking of getting 27" imac , upgrading processor i7 , graphics card 2gb version...however i've been reading cheaper upgrade ram on own (would looking @ least upgrade 8gb now, doubt afford 16gb) question is: easy enough/cheaper so, , invalidate warranty or applecare if start upgrading things on own?

in advance can give!

 

if can use screwdriver, can change ram.
16 gb should cost less 100 usd via newegg , crucial , amazon , corsair.
