Open error 5

my 2007 macbook has started bit slower usual, decided verify permissions in disk utility.

came around 100 readings started with;
open error 5: "input/ output error" on usr/x11/share/man/man3/ ...

finish verifying permissions takes around 1-2 hours.

causing mac take stupid amounts of time simplest of functions.
mac has 500gb hard drive , 2gb ram

solving help, tried googling not help.

 

i suspect hdd dying.
