Memory Utilization on Mac Pro

hello,

have 32 gb ram mac pro 2*2.4 ghz quad-core processor 2tb of storage. despite being power machine on paper, not able use optimally.

2 main programs use on computer r - statistical programming software - , excel (office 2011). in excel deal large files - 480,000+ rows , 10-20 columns. copying column takes long time. having problems r. wondering how optimize performance of machine ensuring utilizes memory needs.

 

so older mac pro has begun show degraded performance or purchased mac pro think should running faster?

osx try use available memory design. see when monitor memory through activity monitor? how of memory being used? page outs? page outs indicate possible memory issue.
