Apple earphones are not working with macbook pro

i have 13" 2011 model of macbook pro. morning when plugged in apple earphones headphone jack, sound still coming out of macbook pro speakers instead of earphones. tried set of apple earphones , same thing happened again. have running snow leopard , updated computer yesterday. both these earphones work fine ipad.

 

sure wasnt mic jack? 1 closest speaker..
