Is 4G a gimmick? Is it everywhere?

so have iphone on softbank japan. is/was 3g. means 3g carrier signal no? if softbank isn't 4g network having 4g phone wouldn't matter right? how know if softbank 4g capable without going store , asking them?

thought reading somewhere carriers advertising 4g when they're not 4g. comment mean?

 

no carrier has real 4g. at&t , t-mobile bill hspa+ 4g, while acknowledges lte 4g. neither are. actual standard apply lte advanced, not offered carriers yet.
