iMovie Hangs on Import of MPG files

greetings all,
purchased new macbook pro 10.7 lion. not have idvd, i'm trying imovie.

have mpg video files sony cam-corder. i've moved them camera hard drive. when import these mpgs imovie, nothing happens. see pop-up reads, "optimizing video - processing event imovie-mymovies"

nothing happens in popup. progress bar never starts. seems hang @ point.

i've used idvd on older macbook videos same camera. never had problem importing movies.

codex problem. i've read mpgs in mpeg-2 file-types , mac 10.7 has problems mpeg-2.

ideas?
