can the iPhone 3GS still be used if I get the iPhone 4 or another phone

i thinking of using iphone 3gs more media player or portable game unit , using net via wifi @ home. possible? thought if remove sim card device becomes useless then? or can still update , not going use phone features or internet outside.. since have 3gs. why thought can give small kid use during car rides..... advise?

 

it'll work fine without sim - not phone! , it'll dependant on wifi various data functions, ipod touch.
