hello imac-ers,
considering turning on lion's filevault whole-disk encryption base-model 2011 imac since have read horror stories encryption making disk-recovery difficult wanted hear if had
questions are:
- did notice slowdowns accessing or writing files hdd, or launching favorite apps (or other performance related issues)?
- were apps (besides starcraft ii lol) ncompatible filevault encrypted drive?
- did ever have imac stolen , make wish had encrypted (i.e., necessary?
- i guess that's it!
i use filevault ii on of our macs. other sequence of boot procedure, using transparent.
installed our mbas far machines stollen. travel lot, , there no choice leave our mbas in hotel rooms. after saw how fv2 works, installed on our imacs well.
when first install it, take while before data encrypted. can continue use machine during process, , can shut down between uses. fv2 integrated file system , keeps track of data has been encrypted, , has not. during encryption processes, feel slowdown. however, once complete, not feel slowdown. lot of data may take several hours encrypt, complete overnight. system preferences indicate progress bar.
have not found program incompatibility. file system function, applications have no clue data encrypted.
regarding our individual history of having computer stollen, not mean encryption not necessary. personally, not use fv2 because afraid lose access data. backup for. use fv2 minimize identity theft or other bad things if data ends in wrong hands.
