Mixed Drive Setup (SSD+HDD) in Macbook Pro

first off, did search , parts of overall process nothing exceptional. please add in comments own experience or links other posts. goal of thread create kind of all-encompassing tutorial. i'll try add more go through , install mine later next week.

choosing setup?
unibody macbook pro can take 12.5mm height hard drive. fyi: lot of optical bay "caddy's" accept 9.5mm hard drive. aware of if upgraded 1tb hard drive on 12.5mm.
performance: 2011 unibody macbook pros can utilize sata iii (6 gb/s connection) in hard drive bay, taking advantage of fastest ssds. there confusion on optical bay , speeds.
general rule of thumb ssd/hdd placement:
pre-2011 models
  • hd in main bay ssd in optical bay sata ii (3.0 gb/s) connection. (both hdd/optical bay sata ii)
2011 models
  • ssd in main hard drive bay sata iii (6.0 gb/s) connection, hard drive in optical bay, varied sata connection depending on model. there seems not clear answer on if computer supports sata iii in optical bay. comes play if plan on doing having sata 3 ssd drives in both available slots. view this owc article little more in-depth information dealing 2011 models , sata iii in optical bay.
  • also, seems thought optical bay doesn't have sudden motion sensor protect hard drive bumps or drops. however, several hard drives have built make it.

2012 models - support sata iii (6 gb/s) in both hdd bay , optical bay. i'd recommend leaving hdd in place (more sound proof, less installing) , put ssd in optical bay.

visit thread more detailed explanation on ssd connection, types, trim support, etc.

official "expensive" options
cheap alternatives - highly recommended (view this thread more info , success stories on going hard drive caddy.)

***one major tip when removing odd, have appropriate size screw driver, don't afraid push down harder expected loosen screw. there risk of stripping screw when trying remove first time. take time, align screwdriver screw , try done on first attempt. stripped 1 of 3 screws holding odd in place on 13" mbp, barely removed it.***

installing methods
tips needed here
clean install on ssd + add files on own
i plan go route. take more time, feel there weird things going on current setup don't want use migration assistant , have of settings transferred. i'm going manually transfer files on after have booted ssd.

how make bootable mac os x lion usb drive

files remember:
contacts (icloud)?
itunes (save play count, album artwork etc)
safari or other bookmarks (icloud)
mail folders
applications , plugins
others???

clean install on ssd + migration assistant

copy "clone" existing hd ssd
programs:

file setup:
since price of ssd still considerably more hdd, dual setup allows keep operating system on faster ssd drive , store of "other" files on slower hdd.

default user location located on ssd default. problem location of itunes, photos, movies located. idea move these files hdd. there couple of ways this. easiest, least beneficial way, move whole home folder onto secondary hdd drive.

here tutorial few screenshots showing how home folder location:
how move home folder in os x

more advanced (uses terminal) method, recommended. allows keep of cache files in user folder located on ssd.
here great article talking moving part of home folder onto secondary hard drive.

backup methods:
  • time machine
  • carbon copy cloner: went route. partitioned 150gb (i realize i'd decrease 128gb i'll never have ssd filled completely) on 750gb hdd 128gb ssd backup. went route because wanted able boot in event ssd failed. set schedule weekly backup every sunday in evening. copies files changed, , deleted files move archive folder deleted need more space. theoretically, have ~22gb of flex space deleted files if ssd full. far has worked quick , flawlessly. highly recommend method.

please discourage people wasting money on insanely expensive optibays. stuff costs 2 bucks manufacture price just.
passive adapter next no magic , expensive optibays come same chinese plants cheap ones do.

maybe add setup install advice.
main bay hd in 2011
ssd in optibay in 2011
ssd in main bay in 2011 because of sata 3 issues.
seems confuse people regularly.

installing nobody needs more ccc.
depending on needs people should move no more media folders hdd. movies, pictures, music, documents (if huge).
keep working data, prefs , else on ssd.

sym links in terminal
sudo ln -s -i /volumes/datadrive/movies/ ~/movies
