Mac Mini as a basic developer machine...

hi all,
thought use folks here sounding board make sure i'm still sane in thinking :). i've been considering basic mac mini simple developer machine. doing 4 things machine: writing code (python, perl, c++), running statistical analysis package on small data sets (r), reading journal articles, , creating figures journal articles using illustrator. illustrator pretty extensively used in lab (they don't latex, :( ), , i've been having switch , forth between windows , linux, gets bit annoying (and causes more work have old version of illustator on windows). realize processing limitations of mini, , have more powerful workstation/server push tough jobs onto, , running many things via terminal. @ level, there allow me every day stuff , things more efficiently. overwork mini? or drive fan oblivion? thoughts :).

i have mac mini server model (with no use of server app @ all). write fortran , c++ codes run on large parallel super-computers. simulations, routinely post process data files several giga-bytes in size on mini using matlab, tecplot, paraview, mathematica, etc. mini has no trouble doing fft's on data consisting of ~ 3/4 billion grid points, rendering multi-dimensional contour plots, creating .avi files cfd runs. has done have asked better expected. have 16 gb of ram , 256 gb ssd hard drive in server doesn't hurt when manipulating data.

write journal articles in latex (really mactex) , figures, use tecplot create .eps files. different illustrator, however, don't think mini have issues illustrator either.

try check istat menu periodically throughout day, , have seen, far "overworking" mini or "driving fan oblivion." however, office maintained @ 67 degrees f , mini sits elevated on exposed table allow best circulation.

anyways, i've read far, mini capable of handling work load.
