hi, registered here toss question out. need replace our main desktop computer @ home. it's pc. however, i've used mac 17 years or @ work, 27-inch 2.66 ghz intel core i5 imac, have knowledge of "both universes."
i'm dying imac home use, 21.5-inch model (that suit needs @ home, don't need 27). don't think pcs crap, macs better , totally dive mac pool , in same universe both @ home , on job. i've been telling wife, computer experience has been pcs , has been resistant make change, years if ever got hands on mac, she'd never go back, , she's amenable trying.
i've been shopping around , had decided on refurb apple store ... when came across issue of superdrives in imacs scratching discs. and, on reflection, think it's happened few times imac @ work. i've brought personal discs put things on itunes , later noticed scratches on discs, , i'm quite anal keeping discs in pristine condition.
know i'm luddite in era of "the cloud," , within decade or recordable media cd-rs , dvd-rs going vhs. in here , now, in personal computer usage @ home, still incredible amount of disc usage , disc burning.
point scaring me off, because having drive scratch discs deal killer me. i've read stuff @ various forums how have take discs out way, human reality you're not going 10 times out of 10 (plus other people, including kids, using computer @ 1 point or , impossible guarantee right 10 out of 10 either). i've read people taping slot , using dremel burr aluminum down, i'm not inclined i'm going spend loot on. i'm not inclined spend on computer , plug external burner drive it.
question ... issue apparently prevalent on 2010 imacs. i've gotten mixed information on whether fixed in 2011 imacs (most of refurbs available @ apple store 2011 models). less prone have issue spending little , buying new, recent production imac opposed refurb?
know seem dwelling on issue might inconsequential folks, given other advantages mac. again, use recordable media much, , of things have on recordable media insert computer things irreplaceable, chance of issue happening is, said, deal killer.
in advance help.
if you're scared of imac want one, can buy external h/d pretty cheap , use when need it, , put away when don't. yes not stylish, @ least doesn't have on desk @ times!
allow view cds without scratching them.
