hi all, i'm freelance editor , moving nyc lot more contract work. need reliable home set-up , need equipment make happen. i'm on bit of budget highly aware stuff investment contributes livelihood. i'm thinking around $5k , open selling have put towards stuff makes more sense needs. ok, details:
what have
- imac 21.5'' 1tb, 2010 (not right now, can't give more info)
- apple cinema display hd 23''
- g-drive 1tb + few other less stellar portable drives
- canon t3i + stupid little canon dv camera
- adobe production premium cs5.5
- fcp6 + studio, getting fcpx
what do
what need
- if i'm shooting myself, it's on t3i
- mostly videos web or dvd, shorts , docs festivals
- footage comes hdv tapes, dslr cards, p2 cards, clients' portable drives
- interviews/profiles, low-budget music videos , shorts, light motion graphics, sizzle reels
- while have offlined short shot on red (and hope more), stay @ 1920x1080 , below, requiring heavier duty work (higher res online, color, mixing, etc.) i'd go professional post house.
- decent speakers - still don't have any! nothing fancy, give me better idea computer speakers.
- i don't serious audio anything, basics... still need mixer?
- maybe tape deck. know things expensive , experience wouldn't used much. camera might suggest digitizing hdv?
- thinking of trading in imac mac pro. kind?
- what g-speed es 4tb system? these technical things cards , connections super lost because don't know sufficient me. don't want overdo it.
bottom line is: want capable bigger projects , not limited equipment, not high end need team of people complete project. if has low-budget feature film, want able edit it. if has multi-cam live event shoot, want able edit (quickly , smoothly). if needs digitizing or series of webisodes packaged dvd, want able that. feel current equipment list might limit efficiency , capability. $5k not lot, know, do, of stuff doesn't have top of line. needs job done.
serious responses please. if i've overlooked or being incredibly naive something, feel free call out, came here help. appreciate , thank in advance!

i use set of altec lansing fx6021 (2.1 6.5 inch subwoofer) , sound great. i'm not sure if make them anymore if can find them price highly recommend them quality.
being said, audio production in videos, won't need mixer "basics", can use speakers or set of balanced headphones (i use ultimate ears triplefi10's got $179) equalizing sound , putting other effects on it.
tape deck wouldn't know suggest, haven't had use 1 when i'm working on own , if client wants footage tapes can provide camera. simple connect , import needed transfer data.
if considering purchasing mac pro (strongly recommended faster gpu , cpus rendering plus better storage management , memory, superdrives, expandability etc.) can buy fastest cpu model can afford. if apple plans on releasing new models, should happen soon. advise waiting see do, if we're talking current gen, said fastest model can afford (hold off buying memory , storage upgrades apple these upgraded later), way top 12-core model. in whatever model hd5870. if can afford 3.33ghz 6-core, that. wouldn't go 2.4ghz 8-core because less effective price 12-core models , slower 6-core in benchmarks. can assure 2x6 2.66ghz or 2.93ghz models worth cost boost performance. no further this page see breakdown of these benchmarks.
g-speed es little pricey, if 100% need raid system go it, mac pro can run raid internally , video editing isn't needed, have gotten fine following setup 2tb + 2tb + 3tb 7,200rpm 64mb cache internally video editing without frame drops, etc. time frame drops if i'm running final cut project + event files both external usb drive. internally runs without hitch. i'm not going tell do, if you're looking invest in mac pro divert funds g-speed mac pro (makes world of difference on imac or macbook pro type of work, plus have monitor need tower). bottom line g-speed more important if you're running imac, on mac pro storage config g-speed accomplish self contained. there 2 cents.
