Apple Maintains Third Place Ranking with 11.6% of U.S. PC Shipments in 4Q 2011

research firm gartner today released preliminary personal computer shipment data fourth quarter of 2011, offering picture of market performance during quarter. year-over-year unit growth of on 20%, apple 1 of top 5 u.s. vendors see increase in shipments in overall market shrank 6%.

apple's share dipped 12.9% in third quarter, routinely company's strongest quarter due heavy presence in education. performance marks distinct improvement on apple's 9.0% share in year-ago quarter , continues long-term trend of increasing market share.

as usual, gartner did not cover apple's worldwide market share quarter, company not rank among top 5 vendors on worldwide basis. pc shipments shrank 1.4% year-over-year on worldwide basis, strong growth lenovo , asus being offset declines hp , acer.

update: idc has released numbers fourth quarter of 2011, yielding results similar gartner's. typical, idc pegged apple's market share lower in gartner's data, idc showing apple 10.92% of u.s. market on 18% year-over-year growth.

idc released numbers full-year 2011, showing apple in third place in u.s. market @ 10.73%, 8.83% in 2010. apple's full-year growth of 16.41% outpaced other top-five manufacturers in overall u.s. market declined 5% 2010.
