my laptop froze earlier evening. know hard drive getting stuck on something, since hear sound. must have been timing out (not sure technical term) on sector (or sector going bad).
there place check in log (with terminal)? know in windows, not in mac...
2011 mbp, 10.7.2, 7200 rpm 500 gb hard drive.

there many possibilities other bad sector. if drive active or cpu utilization high (possibly increased temps , fan speed) when you're not running major apps, check see if spotlight indexing looking @ menu bar icon:

also, launch activity monitor , change "my processes" @ top "all processes", click on cpu column heading once or twice, arrow points downward (highest values on top). see may consuming system resources.
