From MP 1,1 -> Hex Core 3.33 - Can I just swap hard drives?

due total lack of self-control , overly generous apple gift card burning hole in pocket, bought bullet , got hex core today. projected speed advantage sandy bridge wasn't worth wait, , can upgrade video card later.

got ram situation under control , bought 3rd party (apparently have toss 3 standard chips when using registered? lame), that's can afford upgrade in thing.

have ssd lion installed in current mac pro. question is: can take out , put in new one, or need reinstall? in addition, i'm taking stock 1tb drive in new mp , putting in 1,1.

i'd not have reinstall if can avoid it. windows 7 going seppuku. i've booted mac pro off macbook while in target disk mode before (ps: takes 30 minutes boot), know it's okay.

lion should work going old 1 new one.

hexcore (3.33ghz 6-core mac pro) need @ least "special" build of 10.6.4 or later, base system on 6-core is.

when upgraded 2.93ghz quad (with 10.6.4 installed) 3.33ghz 6-core, swapped drives , ran trouble, because turns out 3.33ghz (and westmere machines) shipped "special" build of 10.6.4 included updated drivers video cards , stepping of processor. running "old 10.6.4 build" on new hex-core machine, fired geekbench , reporting one-half score should be.

when updated os, updated 10.6.5 , fine. running 10.6.4 system discs fine too.

but, lion, should fine swapping hds out (or ssd) because lion contains of needed drivers 2010 mac pros new sandy bridge imacs , macbook pros.

doubt have trouble. make sure hds , ssds sata ii because 2010 mac pro takes (cannot take sata iii (6g) drives). luck.
