the internal hard drive on summer 2010 imac appears have died (or @ least not functioning properly). thankfully had external drive connected time machine, data backed up. afaik here options replacing drive:
1. internal drive replaced apple service provider.
2. buy firewire external hard drive , use main drive.
3. buy usb 2.0 external hard drive , use main drive.
i'm leaning towards #3 because it's fast , easy, , there wide selection of usb 2.0 drives around here , they're deal cheaper firewire drives (nt$3500 2gb usb 2.0, vs. nt$5500 firewire).
i've heard mixed reports usb 2.0 performance. it's flaky , unreliable, , overall firewire more stable. others hogwash , in real world there's no noticeable difference.
guys think?
if drive under applecare still, i'd opt option #1 personally. but, if you'd rather not/can't go route, not suggest using usb 2.0 drive main boot drive. tried booting ccc clone on western digital usb drive , boot time painfully slow, somewhere in ballpark of 15 minutes, , on i7 imac. don't think you'd have decent user experience speeds. fw800, while bit more pricey you've found out, worth cost if plan on using long term.
