Two Macs.... One External

hey guys please give point of view.

wife (2011 imac 1tb hd) , (2009 mbp 500gb hd) had our own external. wife's failed. little wd passport external use rip jiu jitsu video's , have connected tv. soooooooo

purchase 2tb owc mercury elite pro external hard drive. here planning.

1)have connected via firewire 800 wife's imac. using time machine time. have firewire 800 port connected same hard drive , use computer via time machine.

here questions.

should i,
1-partition external hard drive 1tb each. 1 mine , 1 hers?

or

2-don't partition. plug in , let time mating create .backup folder each of us?

if computer asleep , decide up. once plug in, wonder if wake computer. don't mind, wondering if knows this.

please let me know advise guys.

you shouldn't have same drive connected 2 macs simultaneously via firewire. instead, leave connected imac. partition drive, when mounts, it's 2 separate logical drives. have share partition on network, can access it. can backup partition , can backup yours. recommend carbon copy cloner creating , maintaining bootable backups, tm can't do.
