iMovie Freezes Up

everytime try edit or make changes movie in imovie, (we talking 40 second clips) freezes , spend next twenty minutes looking @ spinning wheel. i've forced quit , re-booted numerous times. have 58 gig available on hard drive that's not it. i'm not sure issue is. suggestions?
