Help backing up a MacBook pro

i purchase 2011 macbook pro friend barely uses it. before buy though i've promised him data external harddrive use on pc. best way go doing this, keep functionality of drive on pc?

if you're talking windows pc, may application copy files on - you're not worried copying system files , like. have chronosync myself.

if he's getting mac, you're better off using time machine backup, way friend can restore user accounts , system files quite easily.
