Macbook no longer connects to external monitor

hey guys, i've had on going issue connecting external displays unibody macbook (late 2008). started when accidentally turned on macbook in clamshell mode (moved bluetooth mouse , turned on), went crazy, restarted, froze, etc. , no longer connected macbook external monitor (mini displayport hdmi). started using old mini displayport , usb hdmi converter , worked while until once again stopped working. got new cable , wont connect now.

when plug in mini displayport hdmi cable macbook screen flashes if monitor has connected nothing happens. cant drag mouse over, not show monitor under detected displays, nothing. yes, external monitor set right input (lol).

when try turn on macbook external monitor plugged in, macbook doesnt turn on, freezes on boot up. never used happen before. (graphics card error?)

equipment working with:

2.4 ghz 13.3" unibody macbook (late 2008)
osx lion 10.7.2 (issue happened snow leopard too)
24" benq g2420hd monitor
mini displayport hdmi cable

note: cable , monitor work fine, tested them on sisters macbook pro. found out apple care ended 20 days ago...what bummer if need repair.

have genius appointment set on tuesday, wondering if here knows if hardware or software issue...
