It's getting dang near impossible to activate iPhone2G with AT&T

i wanted rock original iphone2g (purchased on launch day , can't let go. . .) awhile.
used simple plug in itunes , within moments set , ready go.
not now.

iphone wouldn't activate no matter what. had original sim (came iphone). trip at&t store provided me new sim card , instructions at&t can't (won't?) activate there in store.

once home , in itunes iphone restored wouldn't activate. in fact, activation screen no found. (apparently new itunes no longer activates these older iphones?)

611 call at&t , 2 supervisors later along 45 minutes , , forth hold time , me providing various serial numbers in iphone , set.
told these iphones no longer supported apple (that knew) nor at&t (that didn't know) , window activation @ closing.

food thought if thinking of doing did.
pretty soon, unless iphone unlocked, it'll ipod status!
