Backing up - help!

i got macbook pro.
i'm trying move mobile me icloud
said went time machine that. won't let me, saying don't have enough room on external hard drive.
don't know don't know i'm looking @ have never come close filling external hard drive before. looks have old macbook backed up, mac book pro wanting (in process) maybe have backed copy of external hard drive well?

possible? should seeing when open ehd , should not seeing?
help!
