Can't keep external monitor video feed on after Macbook lid is closed

i'm not sure i'm doing wrong, can't figure out how keep computer going sleep mode when have external monitor connected , lid on macbook closed.

specs on macbook follows:
late 2008 13" aluminum macbook
2.4 ghz intel core 2 duo
4 gb ram
nvidia geforce 9400m 256 mb
os x lion 10.7.3

connecting older westinghouse lcd tv no problems. going macbook mini displayport tv monoprice mini displayport --> dvi adapter. picture comes across great on tv not stay on once macbook closed. did research , found external display should automatically stay on os x lion. that's not case me. read if key pressed on external keyboard once lid closed, wake external monitor. connected external keyboard , tried pressing key, didn't work me. lastly, tried insomniacx, didn't work either.

ideas on doing wrong? thanks.
