i have old iphone 4 kept after bought 4s (both at&t). i'm traveling new zealand week - possible buy prepaid sim card iphone 4 , use there?

no, because cannot unlock iphone use different carrier's sim card. either need purchase unlocked iphone, unlocked non-iphone, or use international roaming at&t.
