star-ledger reports suffered apparent heart attack in new jersey home on thursday morning.

hegyes best known playing juan epstein on "welcome kotter," 1970s sitcom, starred john travolta , gabe kaplan. appeared in 4 seasons of sitcom , joined of fellow sweathogs @ "welcome kotter" reunion held @ 2011 tv land awards. after "kotter," hegyes went on co-star in "cagney , lacey" detective manny esposito. other tv work includes episode of "the love boat," "newsradio" , "chips."

hegyes' last credited role in 2002 movie "hip, edgy, sexy, cool."

brother mark told star-ledger robert retired, still talked being involved in local arts efforts. "he had these great schemes," brother said, "but last week said, 'i'm not going anymore.'"

hegyes survived 3 siblings, 2 children , 2 step-children.
