Crashed HD, Time Machine Restore on SMALLER HD?

my 250gb hd in 2009 mbp decided crap out.

i've got time machine back-up. whew.

here's problem: thinking getting intel 320 ssd (160gb) , later swapping out optical drive optibay standard (bigger) hd.

before buy ssd, time machine restore work on smaller hd? or have buy both hds now, restore bigger hd, fresh lion install on ssd?

 

you can restore smaller hard drive long data fit. you'll chance selectively restore folders user folder , applications, you'll prune if necessary.
