Using mac mail to clean up gmail

mb 2.4 ghz
osx 10.6.8

hello all,
trying clean out gmail account because on 95% full.
use mac mail read email via imap protocol.

when delete email on mac mail deletes off gmail server did create local folder "on mac" called "gmail backup"

highlighted of emails before 2009 , dragged them on local folder. thought go , delete of them they're not showing @ in mac mail inbox they're not deleted off server.

wanted avoid doing pop because don't want move of mail local - wanted move on 2 years old or so.

doing wrong?

so dragged mail gmail folder new local folder created called "gmail backup"? , after dragging messages over, didn't show in gmail backup folder (as in, when select "gmail backup" there no messages)? , further, missing gmail inbox? you're saying?
