tm can pain @ times. if have finder window open on root of volume backing to, close it! turn off spotlight indexing of volume backing , speeds go normal. before going further, mount volume "time machine backups" showing on desktop. use disk utility check volume , if gets lost, hangs or goes "deep traversal" delete , start over. it's better start fresh backing hundreds of gig let tm sit there , spin weeks find when need nothing backed up.
know, use tm backup lacie fw drive , wd usb drive plugged time capsule. when upgraded hdd, before learned how easy use ccc, started "fresh new" tm backup , able use migrate when installing new hdd. use time machine editor make backups happen daily @ 3am. way "tm clock" isn't spinning when i'm sitting @ mac.
have had more 2 occasions time machine data corrupt allow restore. in 1 case, power supply in 1st gen time capsule died , had replaced apple. while out repair, daughter's hdd got wiped , files lost forever. on occasion, wife had been backing via 802.11g , when hdd got wiped, backup badly corrupted nothing restored. had resort restoring crashplan's servers. in instance, having problems tm on macbook , apple support told me delete old tm backup , start over. it's not such big deal long hdd doesn't die before new backup finished.
bottom line never rely on single tm backup whether local or network backup. never allow spotlight index tm backup make backup slow may never finish.
