Retina Math - How close do you normally hold the iPad?

yesterday, in apple's retina math class,
instructor reminded iphone has more detail @ 326ppi
our retina can resolve when held 10 inches our eye.

taught ipad @ lower 264ppi offers
same beyond retina resolution when held 15 inches our eye.

sounded wonderful , supported graphs , mathematical formulas,
i'm wondering distance hold ipad , iphone eyes?
