my mac pro 3,1 has 6gb of ram 800mhz(which expensive hell), 2 x 7200rpm hdds, 8800gt, 2x2.8ghz quad core.
planning on getting more ram, ssd os , apps , perhaps upgraded graphics card.
ssd - have sata2 worth it
graphics card - see 5870 costs $500!!!!!!!!!! can latest , greatest pc @ price. 5870 pc @ $70! there other options?
ram - have no page outs , 2008 mac ram expensive
question: think worth upgrading components or next imac top specs when releases?
if don't mind bit of tinkering , have technical savvy, how install pc card mac pro. way cheaper mac-ready cards. read 6870 works right out of box, can flash other cards make work. personally, have msi gtx550 ti.
2 things warn (from experience):
- cards, use 2 power cables. 8800gt, have 1 cable in there. can buy cable $5-10 on amazon or ebay. 1 of main reasons went gtx550 ti because needed 1 cable power , it's still great card.
- lose boot screen (no big deal?) , software dvd player or steam. depends on card (mainly 6870 think). i'm not sure if there's been fixes that.
ram expensive. want upgrade bad 6gb still holding up.
depends on do. if you're gaming, graphics card should #1 on list, since 8800gt seems die out (like mine , many others). if use pro apps, maybe ssd or ram upgrade more beneficial.
