Dead ODD- can I remove it?

just quick question- odd in 2008 15" mbp no longer works, thing make extremely loud grinding noise every time boot up- loud enough can't boot during middle of lecture without half room wondering hell happening.

planning on replacing odd ssd next summer anyway, want know if there's problem taking out odd now? having nothing connected sata cable won't have effect on how mac boots or runs, correct?
