G4 iMac OSX Install Question

i'm trying fresh install of osx.
i've booted off of install media.
i've gotten past apple spinning wheel.
i'm @ grey screen beach ball.
can move around mouse, no problem.

how long should take osx installer come up?
it's been few hours far.

is cd/dvd try boot original grey restore cd/dvd, came mac or grey restore cd/dvd mac (which not work) or retail version of mac os x (which version)?
