i have been trying read lot apple tv 2 , eyetv , mac minis used htpcs, far, cannot understand if there way standard cable channels without paying local cable provider or satelite dish company. have internet service through cable provider, , may upgrade internet service them, hate paying as tv.
know how know how standard cable channels without having pay monthly subscription fee? sorry if basic question of htpc users, cannot clear answer on it.
well,,maybe asking wrong question...however..i'll tell how (persoanlly) cut cord , pay way way less month.
standard cable channels that...they belong cable companies..you cannot them free without stealing them, programing on channel..that thing...there many way programing want free..some nominal fee,,some have pay (like sport , special event).
on personal case don't watch tv much, got few show enjoy, connan, daily show, colbert report, how met mother, mythbuster, modem family. mentioned few.
cut cord cable , service got.
internet: $20/m hulu+: $8/m netflix (1dvd): $16/m
hardware got appletv: $99 (bedroom) roku box: $60 (living room) hd antenna: $25
got of shows hulu , netflix, 1 dvd @ time, , stream of stuff itunes on computer , use plex stream appletv , roku box.
can computer on tv (i love 1 $350) , allow use free hulu on web (saving $8/m), , others site offer online content abc player, news, comedy central, , many others.
oh forgot antenna, hd antenna allow me pick of local hd channel on air, live right in downtown atlanta close (and in centry location) of local broadcaster, not same everyone, depending on live, pick broadcaster in 20 mile range (of course can more expensive antenas , increase range, went cheapo one)
edit 2: btw not new setup, cut cord year ago, don't miss 1 bit, can mor lap dances on fridays =)
