Ways to speed up your iMac

hi

ordered myself 2x4gb of ram,so have 12gb in total after installing it,will see of improvement, was wondering if there free programs tune ultilities pc mac?

cheers

that depends on typical workload.

launch activity monitor , click system memory tab @ bottom check page outs. page outs cumulative since last restart, best way check restart computer , track page outs under normal workload (the apps, browser pages , documents have open). if page outs significant (say 1gb or more) under normal use, may benefit more ram. if page outs 0 or low during normal use, won't see performance improvement adding ram.

mac os x: reading system memory usage in activity monitor

you don't need "cleaner" or "maintenance" apps keep mac running well, , of these apps can more harm good. remove files/folders or unused languages or architectures, nothing more free drive space, risk of deleting important in process.

these apps not make mac run faster or more efficiently, since having stuff stored on drive not impact performance, unless you're running out of drive space. of these apps delete caches, can hurt performance, rather it, since more system resources used , performance suffers while each cache being rebuilt.

many of these tasks should done selectively troubleshoot specific problems, not en masse routine maintenance.

mac os x job of taking care of itself, without need 3rd party software. among other things, has own maintenance scripts run silently in background on daily, weekly , monthly basis, without user intervention.

if you're looking improve performance, may help:
