Shared items take awhile to show up?

my airport on shared items list 2 other computers , wireless printer take random amount of time show up. there setting i'm missing or ill informed on subject. thing other computers on, 1 windows 7 , other vista. can print printer, can't access lets memory card on it, until shows up. appear takes time whether mac book pro asleep or restarted. kinda annoying if want access files on other computers , have wait them become available. know whats going on , can me?
