i have 27" 2011 i5 imac 1 tb internal drive. i'd add ssd os , applications, , keep big files on drive have now. @ first thought going easy, more read around, more questions have...
further complicating things fact have ssd-- 3.5" ocz vertex 2. yes, read correctly, it's 3.5" drive. not 2.5". really, use drive if possible. understand it's not fast sata3 drive, have no real need speed. i'd like keep using until ssds mature bit (aftermarket drives trim support apple, lower failure rates, longer life, etc etc). said...
1) mid 2011 27" imac have 1 3.5" bay or two? in, when apple adds ssd, assume use 2.5" drive. there space for?
(this sole criteria cause me buy new drive instead of using existing).
2) connect drive, need other this?

3) there else i'm overlooking? mounting brackets, cable adaptors... anything?
again, rather save money , use current vertex 2 if possible....
tia!
you won't installing imac anytime soon. 2011 imac has 1 3.5" slot disk drive, occupied hdd. if remove hdd fans run full speed, apple changed way hard drive sends temps logic board, when none received runs @ full speed fail safe.
can't see apple implementing trim support third part ssds in near future. had trim in snow leopard, we're on lion , there still no trim support third party drives.
followed this: http://www.btobey.com/learn/imac-ssd-install.php. apple service manual imac helped me lot. velcro stuck of imac in same place apple ssd (underneath optical drive, you'll see mounting points). hasn't caused me problems. you'll see in article other stuff you'll need taking imac apart need 1 cable, bought same one. if on ebay can find official parts, mounting brackets, screws, original sata cable. cable worked fine though, direction of cables fine, there enough space in notches in pressure wall large enough accomodate cable.
waiting until ssds more mature, @ point. new vertexs have had lot of problems seem have been ironed out. went crucial m4 has been working great me. latest firmware , built in garbage collection remove need have trim enabled. reliability hasn't been issue crucial. i'm running 1 in mbp without hitch.
bottom line is, if you're happy removing hdd, having fans running @ full speed time can use current ssd. if not you'll need go buying new one. sata 3 worth imo.
if you're wanting ask me other questions directly you're best dm me on here or drop me email http://www.paul-beattie.com. don't visit these parts often.
