Modifying a font to be a symbol

i'm using indesign create catalogue designed else in previous years. it's camping book have symbols in represent children welcome, no smoking, internet etc. create symbols previous designer modified font make symbols different letters. eg. when type in "a" in font used (equity) symbol "accept reservations", "b" "accept credit cards". somehow has modified font equity make these things. need create 3 new symbols , have no idea how. anyone?

my 2 bits on problem

first off, not designer, make fonts projects. these thoughts , how it. have older mac , can't upgrade until can afford new licenses software use. have typetool few other font making/modifying tools.

generally, if 1 has ability modify font, 1 can create 1 scratch. have changed name , other meta data on existing font had symbols, or have taken <i>equity</i> (by matthew butterick, foundry- mb type ?) , replaced symbols in it. perhaps designer made font , called "equity". don't know.

why modify existing font costs $120 license little weird, digress.

if have created symbols in illustrator, vector designer, or vector graphics program, great. 1 need export each graphic eps file , import file fontography program , replace existing glyph.

if not, find easier create symbol in vector program first rather create in font making program, fontlab or typetool. find interface on programs more difficult use in vector graphic program.

don't know symbols need, got great book pepin press called <i>signs & symbols</i>, isbn 9057680556 ( http://pepinpress.com/catalogue/view/82 ) . comes dvd jpgs can either converted eps, or better, used basis create own symbols. it's out of print, age of internet.

i'd have see font using, see how modified or created. there lot data in font, beyond it's name. don't know how designer made or modified font, did hinting , kerning or see kind of font (ttf or otf).

if concerned kerning, can own ligatures sample , work out there, or perhaps made monospaced doesn't matter.

quite frankly, if going spend money on font design program, , going adding symbols, might want hire designer modify existing font. may cost less , give work designer, who's work using.

option find font has *symbols need , use program popchar ( http://www.ergonis.com/products/popcharx/ ) or text replacement application insert symbol need. popchar special symbols. program textexpander can automatically insert symbol when string of text typed. instance, when type "~scruple" textexpander inserts "℈" symbol scruple.

might easier , less expensive change how working aren't using font insert symbols.

*- if find font has symbols need , isn't free font, license if it's commercial use. made font takes lot of work.
