Macbook pro 17" (circa 2007/8) screen dying

fired mac , appears every other column of pixels has either died or stuck, appears low res or pixelated. have noticed flicker in backlight , randomly these pixels column go green making impossible see properly. im getting moment lowering screen res huge able see. know not graphics card issue works fine when plugged external screen im trying work out if screen fault or cable has gone. ideas?
