Can't jailbreak 3gs (no identifying data fetched)

hi guys
have 3gs 4 month (had jailbreak previous owner). last week did switch of , since cant run again.
phone model , i'm in south africa
restored phone thru itunes. ( guess 5.1) when itunes wants varify phone says have insert sim card (s.a. sim in phone)
if try run redsnow (0.9_10b6) runs thru first 2 screens , "no identifieing data fetched"
please can tell me whats going on or do mistake.
