Have you been able to run Samba newer than 3.2.15 in Lion?

hi, all.

have made tool (called smbup) supposed front-end samba lion. made because bunch of friends of mine have mediacenters or old devices can communicate through smb1 , lion's smb implementation doesn't work them.

have made installer samba , dependencies (my program allows user download , install it) it's latest version supported macports (which 3.2.15), old one.

version has issues user group resolution i've been trying newer version work, haven't had luck. newer versions either don't compile or crash on startup.

so, question twofold. either/or:

1.-have been able run macports samba version (3.2.15) in authentication mode? (guest mode works ok) if so, how did manage so?

2.-have been able compile/run newer version of samba in lion authentication (not guest access) works? if so, how did it, did modify macports or homebrew it?

i run samba here macports , have no issues authentication. how have configured. there various auth options available you, im using simplest method use smbpasswd backend. can specified in configuration file with:

passdb backend = smbpasswd

need run smbpasswd tool setup user , password. view man page more info on that. once setup correctly, can specify users/groups have access shares on individual basis.

side note, regarding crashing experienced later versions, might try starting smbd -l switch , specify path store logs, way can see causing crash examining logs. samba4 available on macports havent tried installing myself, im quite content current version.
