Android Tops 50%, iOS Hits 30% in U.S. Smartphone Installed User Base

research firm comscore today released results of latest survey of mobile phone users in united states, finding google's android , apple's ios continue dominate smartphone landscape.

highlight of comscore's report android passing 50% of installed smartphone user base first time, grabbing 50.1% of market during three-month period of december through february. marks gain of 3.2 percentage points since previous three-month period , gain of 17 percentage points on past year. apple's iphone has seen strong performance, gaining 1.5 percentage points on previous period , 5 percentage point year-over-year hit 30.2% of market.

notably, apple has moved passed motorola in overall mobile phone user base in united states, apple's share growing 2.3 percentage points on previous three-month period while motorola's share shrank 0.9 percentage points. apple holds third highest share of mobile phone user base in united states, placing behind samsung , lg.

comscore's data tracks installed user base rather new handset sales, making more reflective of real-world usage slower respond shifting market trends other studies. difference between 2 types of studies highlighted in nielsen report last week showed similar number comscore's data among "all smartphone owners" in united states. strength of iphone 4s launch, nielsen's numbers showed android's 16-point lead on iphone narrowed 5 points when looking @ purchased devices within past 3 months.
