Playing home movies via Iphone, NAS drive on TV

i have problem playing transferred home movies on flat screen tv through “tv out” feature of iphone 4.

brief history:

have captured tb worth of various home movie videos vhs tape pc hard drive in avi format using avs video recorder. used avs video converter convert avi movie files m4v files, play these movies on iphone. copied these m4v video files western digital “my book live” nas drive allows me view video using iphone, via wd app, without using iphone internal memory. works far.

problem thought show these videos family members through big screen tv @ house, , hooking iphone tv’s audio/video inputs, via cables, using tv out , access videos nas drive when using iphone alone. however, home movies not play on tv! after conversation apple techs told using iphone’s “tv out” feature view video onto tv, via iphone , works video stored on internal memory of iphone itself, not accessing 3rd party drives nas.

told there ways around like:

1- syncing videos iphone (to save storage space) , viewing them on tv via “tv out”
2- getting ipad (bigger screen iphone) , accessing videos through apple cloud
3- using apple tv , accessing movies via cloud (which means have bring , hook-up apple tv receiving tv). not sure method.
4- something airplay , mirrioring???

question is: there way access nas drive (which has videos stored) , play videos on household’s tv, many people comfortably view @ once, via iphone? or, there method?

advice appreciated i’m driving myself nuts on this.
