macbook (late 2008, unibody) running lion. typically used email, web browsing, managing itunes library, , managing iphone , ipad. in grand scheme of things, lightly used. using 146gb of 250gb drive, including 8,200 songs. i'm pretty sure have not done put virus, etc. on computer.
when run disk utility (and superduper), reports hard drive has 590,000 files , 149,000 directories. boggles mind. no way user generated. i've tried cleaning out safari cache without substantial impact. ccleaner unhelpful -- rid of 5,000 files. i've noticed number of files steadily increases; around 400,000 couple months ago.
system directory reports 96k files. 46k files in users. 29k in library. hidden usr folder has 29k files.
i've looked around , cannot find these files , folders on disk. utilities daisy disk have not been helpful, because report space, not number of files. best can tell, these thousands , thousands of files small.
so, 2 questions:
1. ring bell and, if so, ideas cause , solution?
2. know of file explorer utility in figuring out files/folders number, opposed size?
help!
