Which spec for Macbook Pro?

long time reader, first time poster here. apologies in advance if have posted in wrong place, wanted quick bit of advice.

i'm uk, travelling la , vegas in april , thinking of purchasing macbook pro.

looking @ forum posts, 15" should fine, although bit lost on specs should get.

use ipad2 lot of time need macbook pro general websurfing, email, downloading , viewing photos, videos , songs. think decent processer required converting mp4s , avi files necessary. understand more pay more performance can recommend based on needs? wont travelling around it, stay @ home.

budget approx £1000 flexible if think wise so.

the base 13" , 15" more enough stated needs, maybe @ refurb store older models, mac since 2006/2007 can want (flash video bit cpu intensive, exclude ppc macs).
don't need 100 or 200 more mhz save 1 or 2 minutes during transcoding process of .avi or .mp4 file, unless make money , need accumulated minutes.
