Safe to upgrade?

back in august kept hearing of people saying upgrade snow leopard lion caused them lose of data on internal harddrives. have been hesitant upgrade lion because , curious has apple fixed many of upgrading bugs? have 1tb harddrive on imac , have no easy way of backing data up. want peoples opinions risk small enough take? can share story had upgrade process?

i upgraded 3 system (2 mbps lion, , 1 server lion , lion server) , no issues on of systems. data retained , process completed flawlessly. upgrade, there risks, results may vary.
