Macbook Pro ram problem

hi, new here, please bear me.

purchased macbook pro in october 2008. had applecare, has ran out. running osx 10.6.8. processor 2.4 ghz intel core 2 duo. 4 gb ddr3 memory, have run bit of problem.

last week, macbook pro froze on me. unresponsive. after waiting 15 minutes start responding, went ahead , held power button down shut down. tried power up, did make 3 beeps on , on again.

called 1-800--my-apple since have no apple stores nearby. refer me apollo computers in early, tx. took macbook there.

found on board there ram slot broken. able boot macbook removing stick of ram, running on 2 gb ddr3 only.

gave me 2 options. first option continue using 2 gb ddr3. second option replace entire board. quoted me price of $600.

now, went ahead , said let me use 2 gb of ram. have yet notice of difference, have not yet tried start programs use. went ahead , looked @ utilities, , found out.

"free" part dropped down 8.5 mb when watched youtube video.

anyway, should do? need take apollo , put new board in there? i'm not particularly thrilled putting $600 3+ year old machine out of warranty. i've considered buying new macbook, i've read rumors new version coming out later year. , really, outside of problem, i've never had real problems macbook. hate idea of replacing may still have few years left in it. whatever case, need answers.

thank reading.
