Retina ready websites?

my understanding images displayed on websites need balance quality file size. have been lead believe screens or browsers display 72 px/inch. confuses me when there new mobile devises high resolution or use retina display. also, these devises available there outpouring of upgraded apps saying updated graphics new displays. questions these:

  1. do browsers or screens display maximum of 72 px/in?
  2. do these new hardware products require higher resolution images on site good?
  3. what resolution best used photo gallery on site?
  4. what difference, if any, between 2 resolutions (image , hardware pixels)

ask because working on putting photographs online , them displayed @ fullest potential.

thank you.
